Who We Are

R. Brent Tully (Executive Producer) is an astronomer at the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii. He is best known as the co-originator of the Tully-Fisher relation, which led to the current preferred estimate of the size and age of the universe. Dr Tully was also the Executive Producer on the recent PBS NOVA show “The Runaway Universe.”

Susan Friedman (Producer/Director) is an award-winning documentary filmmaker with 20 years of experience in the field of education. She is currently on the faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz.  Many of her films have been aired on PBS. She has received grants from the National Science Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, Zellerbach Foundation, Pacific Islanders in Communication and Fleishhacker Foundation.  Her credits also include a Grammy-winning documentary on the making of an MC Hammer music video.

William K Hartmann (Host, Astronomer) is an internationally known astronomer, writer, and artist.His research involves the origin and evolution of planets and planetary surfaces, and the small bodies of the solar system.  He was a participate in the Mariner 9 and Mars Global Surveyor Mars missions  He is senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson.

Catherine Butler (Senior Co-Producer) has over ten years of experience helping to research, develop and produce documentary and educational films for a variety of clients including The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, The Southern California Earthquake Center and the National Science Foundation.  Her recent credits include The Future of Food and two hour-long specials.

John Chater (Director of Photography) John was raised in Scotland and graduated from West Surry College for Fim and Video in 1986. For the next six years John worked in London for the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV as a cameraman. Since coming to the USA he has worked as a freelance Director of Photography in over 30 countries in hundreds of Documentary projects and has one numerous awards. his major clients include: HBO, PBS, Discovery and the BBC. His most recent credit is for several of the episodes of the Strange Days on Planet Earth series for PBS.

Mahri Holt (Editor) is an independent filmmaker, editor and recent graduate of San Francisco State, Graduate School. Her award winning film, The Listener, is currently being shown at film festivals around the country.
Cynthia Zeiden, Zeiden Media (Promotional Manager) holds a Masters Degree in Broadcast Management from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and serves as the Past President, Trustee and Activities/Programs Chair for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, San Francisco/Northern California chapter.  Zeiden Media is a company that partners with content providers whether independent producer or foreign network to package content for the widest distribution possible.
Studio on the Mountain Productions is an independent film production house that Susan Friedman started in 1985. Susan is an award-winning documentary filmmaker with 20 years of experience in the field of education. She is currently on the faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz.  Many of her films have been aired on PBS. Ki Ho Alu: That’s Slack Key Guitar that she produced and directed is currently on PBS. She has received grants from the National Science Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, Fleishhacker Foundation, Pacific Islanders in Communication and from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) (www.piccom.org/) supports, advances and develops Pacific Island media content and talent that results in a deeper understanding of Pacific Island history, culture, and contemporary challenges.  PIC funds and distributes film, video and new media to the broadest possible audience and supports media talent through scholarships, training, and professional development.
